The Ponte do Pinhão was designed by the famous architectural firm of Gustave Eiffel . Although Eiffel himself was not directly involved in the construction, his firm provided the design.
Construction of the bridge began in 1903 and it was inaugurated in 1906 .
The Douro Line, to which this bridge belongs, was built in the late 19th century (the section to Pinhão was completed in 1880) and was of great importance for the transport of people and goods, especially the region's port wine.
The bridge is close to the famous Pinhão train station , which is known for its beautiful 19th-century tile panels (azulejos) depicting scenes from wine growing and daily life in the region.
