After Germany had to return the painting The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb to Belgium as stipulated in the Treaty of Versailles, and the Belgians saw a threat from WWII looming, it was decided in 1940 to give the painting a safe refuge in the Vatican. When the painting was on its way to the Vatican, Italy declared war alongside Germany, and the plans were adjusted. It was decided to take the painting to Pau in France.
