El nombre Hrazdán se deriva del persa Frazdán. Con una población de 41 875 habitantes en 2011, es la séptima ciudad más grande del país.[1] Durante los años de la Unión Soviética fue una de las ciudades más industrializadas de la República de Armenia, llegando a superar los cincuenta mil habitantes. El monasterio de Makravank está localizado en Hrazdán, así como la iglesia de San Astvatsatsin del siglo XIII y una capilla del siglo XI.
