Oudenburg es una de las ciudades más antiguas de nuestro país. Los romanos construyeron allí en el siglo IV un castellum como defensa contra los corsarios sajones que invadían. En ese entonces, la línea costera irregular aún bordeaba la periferia de la futura ciudad. La estructura cuadrada de esta fortaleza aún se dibuja claramente en el núcleo actual del pueblo. También durante la Edad Media, Oudenburg desempeñó un papel significativo en Flandes. En este contexto, mencionamos la fundación, alrededor de 1084, de la abadía de San Pedro. En el ámbito de la industria de la lana, Oudenburg fue uno de los asentamientos más importantes de Flandes. Es una ciudad con un pasado centenario, del cual aún recuerdan varios monumentos.
