De Kraenepoel, un estanque de 22 ha rodeado de bosques, es el último de los muchos estanques de campo que en la Edad Media adornaban el Bulskampveld, la extensa heath del Aalter a Brujas. Surgió a partir del siglo XIII cuando los habitantes excavaron piedras de campo o extrajeron turba. Las fosas restantes se utilizaron para la cría de peces. El nombre ‘Kraenepoel’ aún se refiere a la antigua denominación neerlandesa de turba: kraene o krane. Está protegida como área natural como parte de Natura 2000. Durante períodos de heladas severas, la Kraenepoel a veces se congela parcial o totalmente y, debido a su poca profundidad, a menudo es el primer estanque en el que se patina.
