Desde 1923 hasta 1992 se extrajo carbón en la mina de Zolder. Fue aquí donde el 30 de septiembre de 1992 cerró definitivamente la última mina de carbón de los Benelux. La llegada de numerosos trabajadores extranjeros a la mina otorgó a la comuna en poco tiempo una población multicultural.
Turísticamente, el circuito de carreras de Zolder es el principal atractivo de la comuna.
En la comuna se pueden visitar algunos castillos como: el castillo Vogelsanck y el castillo Meylandt.
Además, la zona de estanques de Medio-Limburgo se encuentra en parte en la comuna.
