El Schoonselhof era originalmente un dominio de castillo. La parte central alrededor del castillo y del estanque data del siglo XVIII. En 1911, la Ciudad de Amberes compró el dominio para convertirlo en un cementerio. Esa elección resultó ser finalmente no evidente porque la zona se caracteriza por un alto nivel freático y capas de arenas movedizas. La red de canales y zanjas, que es característica del dominio, era necesaria para poder enterrar allí. Esa estructura hídrica es interesante para diversas faunas y floras, como las libélulas y los anfibios. Las praderas abiertas se gestionan de diferentes maneras.
