Según Christian Stickx, los templarios jugaron un papel importante en la Batalla de los Espaderos en 1302. Los caballeros templarios flamencos eligieron a los municipios flamencos y en contra del rey francés. Sin embargo, los templarios franceses marcharon con Felipe el Hermoso, pero a regañadientes. No es ilógico, ya que algunos años después el rey francés exterminaría por completo esta orden. Fue gracias a la información e influencia de los templarios de Ypres que los templarios franceses finalmente no entraron en los pantanos de Groeninghenkouter durante la batalla de los Espaderos.
