El 13 de mayo de 1847, el arquitecto de la ciudad François Drossaert presentó un dossier de diseño para la construcción de una nueva prisión detrás de la comisaría en la Gran Plaza. El 1 de octubre de 1848, el edificio entró en funcionamiento. Hasta 1862, aquí se cumplían efectivamente las penas policiales. Tras la restauración en 1978, se convirtió en un museo.
Después de 20 años, el museo fue renovado y ampliado de manera significativa. No solo se duplicó el espacio de exhibición, sino que también se proporcionó suficiente espacio para conservar las piezas del museo en condiciones óptimas.
