Merksem es un distrito de la ciudad belga de Amberes. Merksem fue un municipio independiente hasta el 1 de enero de 1983. El topónimo Merksem consiste en dos partes, a saber, "merk" y "heem". Se sospecha que el nombre se refiere a un asentamiento fronterizo francón, que pertenecía al obispado de Cambrai. El asentamiento opuesto habría sido Ekeren, que pertenecía al obispado de Lieja.
