Después de que Bernadette Soubirous viera aparecer a María en una cueva en Lourdes en 1858, tales cuevas marianas se hicieron muy populares. La gruta de Lourdes, con un espacio para velas en la parte inferior y una hornacina con una imagen de María en la parte superior, se ha recreado numerosas veces en miniatura en Flandes. Esta fue construida en 1874 y hoy es un popular lugar de descanso para caminantes y ciclistas.
