Las setos de espino servían para delimitar los prados antes de la aparición de los alambres de espino. En el nombre, por cierto, se oyen las afiladas espinas que son tan típicas de la especie. Por lo general, los arbustos no podados florecen en mayo. Cuenta cuántos estambres (estilos) hay por flor. Si en cada flor solo hay uno, entonces tienes un espino de un estilo frente a ti. ¿Más de uno? Entonces es su hermano, el espino de dos estilos (C. laevigata).
