Es el segundo parque nacional más antiguo de la Región Valona (después de los Altos Valles). Este estatus se otorgó en 1969 para garantizar la conservación de un paisaje asombroso de bosques de abedules peludos sobre suelo de turba. También hay una fauna y flora boreal típica.
La ubicación está a una altitud de aproximadamente 550 m y forma parte de la meseta forestal de Freyr, a unos kilómetros al noreste de la ciudad de Saint-Hubert.
