Alrededor de los esqueletos de los iguanodones en la cueva que se corta a través del carbonífero, se han encontrado sedimentos que proceden de lagos y pantanos: arcilla de Wealden. Por lo tanto, no se trata de material erosionado de ríos, lo que socava la teoría original de Edouard Dupont tanto literal como figuradamente. Esa hipótesis sostiene que se trataría de un valle o un barranco en el que habrían caído los iguanodones. Según el paleontólogo-geólogo Pierre Bultynck, los cadáveres habrían sido arrastrados hacia el punto más profundo de la región. Se han acumulado en los sedimentos de arcilla y finalmente se han vertido en un pozo natural, el sumidero.
