Ya en el siglo XVI se nombró la capilla por su nombre. Los peregrinos venían de lejos a orar por campos fértiles.
El edificio actual fue construido en 1780 y en 1899 se restauró la capilla.
Sirvió como el escenario de la primera batalla de Neerwinden (1693) entre las tropas francesas de Luis XIV contra las de Orange-Nassau y la Liga de Augsburgo, una alianza monstruosa con soldados de la República Holandesa, Inglaterra, España, Suecia, Baviera, Hannover y Sajonia.
En 1793 se luchó en la misma llanura la segunda batalla de Neerwinden entre el ejército revolucionario francés y una alianza militar de Habsburgo austríacos y los belgas del sur.
