La primera mención de las beguinas en Mechelen se remonta a 1209. Después de muchos años de establecerse fuera de las murallas de la ciudad, regresaron al centro de la ciudad en 1578.
En 1629 la capilla construida anteriormente fue reemplazada por una iglesia. Pieter Huyssens y Jacques Francart diseñaron un ejemplo típico de la arquitectura barroca para la iglesia del Beaterio (1629-1647) . El diseño combina patrones italianos con un diseño regional que no rompe del todo con el pasado. Después de 1640 , Lucas Faydherbe, alumno de Rubens, es quizás responsable de parte de la decoración interior . Las influencias italianas son evidentes a través de un ritmo de arcadas abovedadas sostenidas por columnas corintias y una imponente cornisa . Las bóvedas de crucería remiten al estilo gótico.
