Escondido en el bosque de Ommerscheider se encuentra un monumento simple realizado por los habitantes del pueblo de Meyerode, en conmemoración de Eric Fisher Wood, teniente de la 106ª división de infantería americana.
Es el único miembro de su unidad que se negó a rendirse después de un intercambio de disparos en las afueras de Schönberg el 17 de diciembre de 1944 y huyó al bosque. A un habitante de Meyerode que le ofreció comida y refugio, le dijo que si no lograba alcanzar las líneas americanas, lucharía solo en el bosque contra los alemanes. En las semanas siguientes, varias patrullas alemanas en el bosque cerca de Meyerode fueron atacadas, causando muertos y heridos.
El cadáver de Eric Fisher Wood fue encontrado a principios de febrero de 1945, rodeado de siete alemanes caídos en combate.
