Quizás alrededor de 1100 se fundó en el lugar de la muerte martirial de Godelieve una abadía de benedictinas. Según la leyenda, la abadía fue fundada por Edith, la hija del segundo matrimonio de Bertolf. Ella nació ciega, pero pudo ver cuando se lavó los ojos con agua del pozo en el que Godelieve fue ahogada.
