De pie a orillas del Escalda, en Schellebelle, el tiempo se detiene por un instante. El ferry es la única forma de cruzar el río aquí, y el recorrido sigue siendo exactamente como debe ser: al ritmo del agua. Para senderistas y ciclistas, es la "puerta de oro" a Kalkense Meersen , una de las reservas naturales más grandes y tranquilas de la región.
El ferry está gestionado por el gobierno flamenco (Agencia de Servicios Marítimos y Costeros) y es totalmente gratuito para peatones y ciclistas. Es un servicio público que garantiza la conexión entre ambas orillas.
En ambas orillas hay una campana o un sistema de aviso. El barquero navega de ida y vuelta a petición. El corto trayecto en ferry ofrece una vista única de 360 grados del Arco del Escalda y la torre de la Iglesia de San Juan Bautista.
