Rogier Van der Weyden es uno de los Primitivos Flamencos del siglo XV, contemporáneo de los hermanos Van Eyck. Nació en Tournai como Roger de la Pasture. Trabajó durante años en el taller de su maestro Robert Campin. Su obra más importante es "La Piedad". En 1435, Van der Weyden se convierte en pintor de la ciudad en Bruselas. Trabajó durante años en los paneles de justicia para el nuevo ayuntamiento, pero lamentablemente se perdieron en el bombardeo francés de 1695.
