En el museo de Ciencias Naturales de Bruselas se encuentra el objeto matemático más antiguo conocido: el hueso de Ishango. Es un hueso tallado, datado alrededor del 22.000 a.C.
El hueso fue encontrado en 1960 cerca de Ishango, un lugar en el (en aquel entonces) Congo Belga. La investigación llevada a cabo por un equipo de arqueólogos, matemáticos e ingenieros ha demostrado ahora que se trata de varas de contar. Probablemente están organizadas con bases 6 y 10, como es habitual en varias regiones africanas. Se puede afirmar sin lugar a dudas que estos dos huesos son los testimonios más antiguos de la capacidad humana para contar o pensar lógicamente.
