Jena fue un centro de ciencia y literatura a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX. La cuna del idealismo alemán y del romanticismo alemán. La universidad era una de las más famosas del país. El poeta y dramaturgo Friedrich Schiller trabajó aquí en la Universidad de Jena. Aún puedes ver su busto aquí en Jena. Schiller también fue un buen amigo de Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, quien vivía a unos 25 km en Weimar. El hermano del famoso científico Alexander von Humboldt también vivió aquí en Jena, junto con su joven familia.
