El distrito de Altstadt-Nord junto con Altstadt-Süd forma el centro de la ciudad. Ambos distritos están limitados hacia la Neustadt por los Círculos de Colonia, que rodean el área urbana medieval en forma de semicirculo. El Rin, que se encuentra al este, limita el área hacia Deutz. El eje este-oeste Cäcilienstraße - Neumarkt - Hahnenstraße representa la línea frontera de las dos partes de la ciudad antigua.
