El distrito de Lichtenfels se encuentra en el oeste de la región gubernamental de Alto Franconia en Baviera. El distrito es miembro de la metrópoli de Núremberg.
El área del distrito está principalmente caracterizada por el Meno y el valle del Meno, que se extiende de este a oeste a través del distrito. Aquí se encuentran las ciudades más importantes del distrito, como Burgkunstadt, Bad Staffelstein y la capital del distrito Lichtenfels. De los afluentes del Meno en el área del distrito, el Rodach, que desemboca entre Hochstadt am Main y Lichtenfels viniendo del norte, es el más grande. Al sur del Meno se extienden las estribaciones de la Alb Franconiana con sus montañas en primer plano, incluida el Staffelberg cerca de Bad Staffelstein. Al norte del Meno se encuentran las estribaciones de la tierra de colinas de Itz-Baunach.
