El Zoológico de Augsburgo se inauguró el 12 de junio de 1937 como parque de la fauna alemana. En la época posterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el antiguo "Jardín Zoológico de Augsburgo" también se enriqueció con animales exóticos. El zoológico de Augsburgo es actualmente la institución cultural más visitada de Suabia, con más de 650.000 visitantes al año, y se encuentra entre los 20 zoológicos y jardines zoológicos más grandes de Alemania.
El zoológico está ubicado en el área urbana, en el borde norte del bosque de Siebentisch, una zona recreativa de Augsburgo que también sirve como área de protección de aguas para el agua potable de la ciudad. Al oeste, el zoológico limita con el parque paisajístico Siebentischanlagen y al norte con el Jardín Botánico de Augsburgo. La superficie total del zoológico es de 22 hectáreas.
