La comunidad religiosa israelita de Leipzig se fundó recién en 1847, aunque ya se pueden encontrar huellas de la vida judía en Leipzig desde la Edad Media. Sin embargo, solo a partir de mediados del siglo XIX se permitió a los judíos establecerse permanentemente en Leipzig.
Desde entonces, se desarrolló una vida judía diversa en Leipzig. Los recién llegados se emancipan cada vez más como ciudadanos de Leipzig. Se construyeron sinagogas, se fundaron escuelas. En solo cien años, la Kehillah de Leipzig se convirtió en la sexta más grande de toda Alemania y en la más grande de Sajonia, en 1925 contaba con alrededor de 13.000 miembros.
