El Geislede se alimenta de dos brazos de origen: el Gieselbach, que surge en Heuthen a aproximadamente 420 m de altura, y el Ebra que proviene de Kreuzebra. Tras su unión, fluye en dirección oeste hacia Geisleden y luego en dirección noroeste hacia Heilbad Heiligenstadt. El curso del Geislede entra en el área urbana de Heilbad Heiligenstadt desde el sureste y desemboca en el Leine en Sperberwiese.
El Geislede atraviesa el casco antiguo histórico de Heiligenstadt de este a oeste y movió hasta seis molinos allí, de los cuales aún se conservan el Herrenmühle y el Klausmühle. En el área urbana, el cuerpo de agua ha sido fuertemente canalizado y en parte también ha sido cubierto por edificios como el Colegio de los Jesuitas.
