La cueva de Hohlenstein-Stadel fue el lugar donde se encontraron los primeros ejemplos indiscutibles de arte, y probablemente de religión. Aquí encontraron la figurilla de marfil de un 'hombre-león'. El cuerpo es humano, pero la cabeza es leonina. Un símbolo también utilizado por el fabricante de automóviles Peugeot. Fue la primera prueba de que la mente humana podía imaginar cosas que realmente no existen. La figurilla con cabeza de león es la escultura zoomórfica (en forma de animal) más antigua conocida en el mundo, y el ejemplo indiscutido de arte figurativo más antiguo conocido. Se ha determinado que tiene entre 35,000 y 40,000 años de antigüedad mediante la datación por carbono de material de la capa en la que fue encontrada
