El castillo de Weesenstein se alza sobre un saliente rocoso de esquisto de nudos con inclusiones de cuarzo sobre el valle de Müglitz, aproximadamente a 3 km al sur de Dohna, en el barrio de Weesenstein del municipio de Müglitztal.
La primera mención documental del castillo data del 17 de diciembre de 1318 en relación con el juramento de ayuda y servicio del burgravio Otto von Dohna hacia el margrave de Meissen, Federico el Pacífico.
