La fuente del Humbach se encuentra en un prado al noreste de Ilmenau, justo al este de la salida 71 de Ilmenau-Ost en la localidad de Bücheloh. Debajo del lugar, forma un valle donde se encuentran la B 87 y los estanques de Humbach.
Los estanques de Humbach son estanques artificiales y rectangulares, que sirven principalmente para la acuicultura.
Sobre el valle se extiende el puente del Humbachtal, de 290 metros de longitud, que forma parte de la línea de alta velocidad Nürnberg–Erfurt.
