El Príncipe Leopoldo von Salm-Salm, quien le dio su nombre a la posterior mina en Hervest-Dorsten, acordó con las compañías mineras los derechos de perforación y explotación. Al propietario del recurso le correspondía un uno por ciento del valor de venta del carbón extraído, aunque esto podía ser anulado mediante pagos únicos. Las perforaciones resultaron extremadamente difíciles debido a la arena fluida y solo pudieron ser realizadas mediante el método de congelación. En 1913, la mina Príncipe Leopoldo extrajo el primer carbón con una capacidad anual inicial de 39,000 toneladas. Una vía de 900 metros conectaba la mina con la estación ferroviaria estatal de Hervest-Dorsten.
