La aldea altmárquica de Böddenstedt, una aldea lineal con iglesia, se encuentra a unos dos kilómetros al suroeste del núcleo urbano de Salzwedel. Al norte fluye el Dumme de Salzwedel. La localidad vecina más cercana al sur es Kemnitz.
La primera mención de Böddenstedt data de 1321 como villam Bodenstede, cuando los caballeros Gebhard y Heinrich von Alvensleben cedieron la aldea a la ciudad de Salzwedel. En 1354 se menciona como villa Boddenstede. En el libro de tierras de la marca de Brandeburgo de 1375, la aldea aparece como Bodenstede. A la antigua ciudad de Salzwedel le pertenecían todos los derechos y el molino, el posterior molino de Böddenstedt, un molino de agua. Otras menciones son 1541 Bodenstedt y 1687 Böddenstedt ante Saltzwedel.
