La localidad de Lautenthal es un balneario reconocido por el estado, que desde 1972 forma parte de la ciudad de Langelsheim en el distrito de Goslar en Baja Sajonia, y desde 2013 lleva nuevamente la denominación oficial de "ciudad montañesa". Lautenthal se compone, además del núcleo central, de las localidades de Laddeken, Rote Klippe y Hüttschenthal.
Lautenthal se encuentra en el valle de Innerste entre Clausthal-Zellerfeld y Langelsheim, en el noroeste de Oberharz. La localidad está situada a una altitud de aproximadamente 300 m sobre el nivel del mar en un cuenco fluvial, mientras que las montañas circundantes alcanzan altitudes de hasta 620 m sobre el nivel del mar. Los ríos Innerste y Laute atraviesan la ciudad montañesa. En dirección a Langelsheim, el Innerste se embalsa en el embalse de Innerstetalsperre.
