Entre las fundaciones que los Reyes Católicos llevaron a cabo se encuentra el Hospital de San Lázaro por real cédula el 30 de septiembre de 1492 . Este hospital era el destinado para curar a los leprosos de la ciudad. El Hospital jugó gran importancia en la epidemia de peste de 1637, siendo el primer centro hospitalario de la ciudad en acogerlos . También es aquí donde comienza el Vía Crucis de la ciudad, el cual asciende hasta la Capilla del Calvario. Hoy en día solo se conserva la Iglesia, la cual es de estilo mudéjar. Lo más destacado de la Iglesia se encuentra en la cripta, cuyas pinturas nos ofrecen un conjunto único a nivel español por su temática, ubicación, naturaleza e iconografía .
