Costa del Azahar es español para: "Costa de Azahar". Según la tradición, las primeras naranjas llegaron con las caravanas de Alejandro Magno (356-323 aC) a la parte oriental del Mediterráneo. Para los moros, el naranjo jugaba un papel importante: este árbol con su hermosa flor era, junto a mosaicos de colores y fuentes salpicantes, uno de los tres elementos esenciales para el diseño de jardines. Pero los azahares no solo tienen una función decorativa, también son conocidos por su efecto medicinal, que ya fue elogiado por el erudito romano Plinio en su Naturalis Historia. Hoy, en la aromaterapia, se han redescubierto las propiedades calmantes y estimulantes del azahar.
