Puerto del Carmen es una localidad del municipio de Tías, Lanzarote, Canarias. Es la principal zona turística de la isla y se extiende a lo largo de unos 7 km de costa, en los que hay varias playas y hoteles con capacidad para hasta 30.000 personas. Se encuentra situado a muy corta distancia del aeropuerto de Lanzarote en la costa oriental de la isla, a resguardo de los vientos alisios que soplan constantemente desde el Océano Atlántico.
La zona de Puerto del Carmen era habitada antes de la llegada de los Normandos a la isla y, al menos desde el siglo XVI, conocida con el nombre de Tiñosa, así aparece en los mapas de Torriani , de Brihuela/Cosala , de P.A. del Castillo y de Riviere . Topónimo probablemente de origen guanche, adaptado a la fonética del español y emparentado con otras variantes léxicas como Tiñor en El Hierro o Tiñoa en Tenerife.[1]
