El río nace al oeste de la Serra del Caíllo, a unos 920 metros sobre el nivel del mar , en el término municipal de Benaocaz.
La cima se llama 'Arroyo Seco' . Su nombre cambia a "Rio Ubrique" a su paso por Ubrique.
El río divide la ciudad en 2 partes: la parte antigua (este) y la parte nueva (oeste).
El río Ubrique es un afluente del río Majaceite que atraviesa la provincia de Cádiz y tiene una longitud aproximada de 10 km.
El río Ubrique ha provocado inundaciones en varias ocasiones. Está en la categoría con más daños por posibles inundaciones , lo que ha motivado la propuesta de medidas de emergencia.
