El Camino Natural Vía de la Plata recupera para el uso de caminantes y cicloturistas el trazado del antiguo ferrocarril Palazuelo-Astorga, puesto en servicio en todo su recorrido (347,5 km) en julio de 1896 (aunque hubo tramos inaugurados previamente) y cerrado al tráfico desde el 1 de enero de 1985 en el tramo Plasencia-Astorga (330,8 km).
Esta etapa transcurre desde la monumental Plasencia por la ribera del río Jerte hacia las Tierras de Granadilla. Se vale del trazado del antiguo ferrocarril Plasencia-Astorga (también conocida como Palazuelo-Astorga) para conducir al viajero desde la estación de ferrocarril de Plasencia hasta el límite municipal entre Jarilla y Casas del Monte. Por el camino se irán descubriendo antiguas infraestructuras ferroviarias como viaductos, túneles o estaciones a las que se ha dado una nueva vida para su uso recreativo.
