Sondernach, con una población de 663 habitantes, toma su nombre del arroyo meridional del valle. Fundada en el siglo XII por los monjes benedictinos de la abadía de Saint-Grégoire, se independizó en 1789. Destruido durante la batalla del Metzeral en 1915, el pueblo cuenta hoy con iglesias conmemorativas y una amplia oferta turística.
