Ya al principio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, las tropas alemanas conquistaron Francia rápidamente. Los británicos abandonaron entonces Francia en masa para reagruparse en Gran Bretaña.
Esta masiva evacuación se llamó operación Dynamo. Más de 300,000 soldados pudieron escapar desde Dunkerque con más de 1,000 barcos.
El HMS Crested Eagle fue uno de los muchos barcos menos afortunados: el barco fue bombardeado por un avión alemán (un Stuka) y encalló en este lugar. Más de 300 soldados perecieron en las llamas.
