El aeropuerto también es conocido como Aeropuerto de Cortina d'Ampezzo y Aeropuerto de Fiames porque se encuentra en la fracción de Fiames.
El aeropuerto fue construido para los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno de 1956. Ha permanecido cerrado al tráfico desde un accidente que involucró a un Cessna 206 el 31 de mayo de 1976. El piloto y los cinco pasajeros murieron en un accidente inmediatamente después del despegue en difíciles condiciones de viento.
