La Amiata es un antiguo volcán inactivo, caracterizado por rocas volcánicas y pequeños lagos. La cumbre se encuentra a 1.738 metros (5.702 pies) sobre el nivel del mar.
El agua de la montaña alimenta el acueducto Fiora, que abastece gran parte de la Toscana del Sur y una parte del Lazio del Norte. En la Amiata también nacen los ríos Fiora y Albegna, este último en la montaña Buceto, que forma el extremo suroeste del macizo.
