La Fontana Pretoria se colocó en el siglo XVI en la Piazza Pretoria, que fue construida especialmente para la fuente.
La fuente fue encargada originalmente por el virrey español de Nápoles Pedro Álvarez de Toledo para su villa florentina por varios escultores de Florencia . Sin embargo, Don Pedro murió antes de que se terminaran las obras en 1554, y su hijo vendió la fuente a la ciudad de Palermo en 1573. Ese mismo año, se construyó una plaza frente al Palazzo Pretorio , hoy ayuntamiento, y el Allí se montaron la iglesia dominicana de Santa Caterina y las 644 partes de la fuente.
La fuente tiene una circunferencia de 133 metros y una altura de 12 metros . La fuente contiene muchas estatuas de diosas y ninfas del río. Como la mayoría de las estatuas están desnudas, la fuente también se llama Fuente de la Vergüenza . La fuente fue completamente restaurada a finales del siglo XX.
