Mersch es el centro (próspero) de la región agrícola en Luxemburgo. El Mamer y el Eisch, dos ríos, desembocan en el Alzette. Que se trate de una región rica se muestra claramente por la densidad de castillos: Mersch posee uno que data del siglo XII. Al suroeste de Mersch, se encuentran nada menos que siete; por lo tanto, se habla con razón del Valle de los Siete Castillos. Al norte de Mersch se encuentra Colmar-Berg, que está completamente dominado por el impresionante castillo de los grandes duques. En Pettingen, al norte de Mersch, se erige un castillo del siglo XIII. Cerca de Schoenfels, situado más al sur, se encuentra un castillo con un donjon del siglo XVI.
