En el siglo XV ya se hablaba de "Blocksyl". En 1581, el pueblo fue fortificado. Alrededor de 1600, Blokzijl recibió varios privilegios, como el nombrar a su propio alcalde. Blokzijl estuvo bajo dominio español durante un largo tiempo y durante ese período, Blokzijl prosperó. El pueblo estaba situado en el Zuiderzee y era un importante punto comercial. Blokzijl obtuvo los derechos de ciudad en 1672.
Hoy en día es un pueblo turístico.
