Nieuwe Pekela es un lugar y antigua municipalidad en la provincia de Groningen, Países Bajos. Nueva Pekela se encuentra a seis kilómetros al este de Veendam. El lugar se originó después de Oude Pekela. El nombre proviene del río Pekel A. Juntos, ambos pueblos forman actualmente la municipalidad de Pekela. La primera mención en la historia del lugar comenzó en 1599 cuando un grupo de frisones y holandeses, reunidos en la llamada Compañía Pekel, compraron tierras de turba a lo largo del río Pekel A de propietarios de la ciudad vecina de Winschoten. El objetivo de la compañía era la extracción de turba, excavando turberas que son muy comunes en el este de Groningen.
