Se encuentra al noreste de Joure y al noroeste de Heerenveen, junto al Nuevo Canal de Heerenveen. En 2021, el pueblo contaba con 390 habitantes. Bajo el pueblo se encuentra también la aldea de Tweehuis. Vegelinsoord surgió en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX como Stobbegat durante las excavaciones de turba a gran escala en la región. El pueblo se sitúa en De Haskerveenpolder. El nombre del lugar de la aldea estaba nombrado en honor al arroyo del mismo nombre que la rodeaba. El nombre actual Vegelinsoord se puede rastrear a la familia Vegelin van Claerbergen, que ha desempeñado un gran papel en la región.
