La Nieuwestad es un barrio y una calle comercial con un canal en el centro de Leeuwarden, en la provincia neerlandesa de Frisia. El nombre Nieuwestad se mencionó por primera vez en 1456 como un barrio o canal agregado. Entre ambos lados de la Nieuwestad hay un puente peatonal a la altura del Herenwaltje; y algunas tuberías, de oeste a este: Adje Lammerts- o Westerpijp, Duca Martenapijp, Nieuwepijp, Lange pijp, y Tontjepijp. En 1601, una parte entre la Lange pijp y la Martenapijp se destinó a mercado de carne. El lado norte o estrecho no se designó como Nieuwestad hasta 1877, sino por los nombres de las tuberías. El lado sur se llama tradicionalmente Nieuwestad. De 1827 a 1891 hubo una Winkel van Sinkel en la Nieuwestad.
