Hoogwoud es un lugar que pertenece al municipio de Opmeer en West-Frisia, en la provincia de Holanda del Norte. El lugar tiene 3.940 habitantes. Hoogwoud está situado entre Hoorn y Alkmaar.
En un campo de maíz cerca de Hoogwoud se encontró a finales de 2019 un anillo vikingo del siglo X. La zona fue utilizada como base de operaciones por los vikingos desde el siglo IX.
El nombre del lugar aparece en 1289 como Hoechhoutswouder y en 1396 como Hogherswoude. Durante mucho tiempo se pensó que el nombre del lugar era para distinguirlo de un Nederwoude cercano. Sin embargo, el nombre más antiguo indica que el lugar estaba situado en un área forestal un poco más elevada. Este bosque era un bosque pantanoso y, a pesar de la explotación, aún había mucha madera, árboles o partes del bosque presentes.
