El municipio de Flekkefjord fue establecido el 1 de enero de 1838. Los municipios rurales de Bakke, Gyland, Hidra, y Nes fueron unidos con Flekkefjord el 1 de enero de 1965.
Flekkefjord es el poblado en el extremo oeste de la región de Sørlandet. El municipio limita con Sokndal y Lund en el condado de Rogaland por el oeste, con Sirdal hacia el norte, y por Kvinesdal hacia el este.
